provinces: San Jose, Alajuela, Heredia,
Cartago, Guanacaste, Puntarenas,
and Limon. These provinces are
divided into 81 cantons. San Jose,
Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago
comprise the Greater Metropolitan
Area (GMA). Approximately 65.7% of
the countries’ total population and
69.7% of the national total labor force
reside in the GMA.

San Jose is the capital city. It is located
approximately 160 km (99.4 miles)
away from the Caribbean Coast
(Limon) and 78 km (48.1 miles) away
from the Pacific Coast (Puntarenas).

are vested in a president, legislative
power is vested in the Legislative
Assembly, and judicial power is vested
in the Supreme Court.

elected for four-year terms.
The Supreme Electoral Body, the
